Spoiler alert!
On this session of anime rewind, I’d like to feature an anime that is out of the ordinary for me. This is why for this rewind, Kaichou wa Maid-sama is featured. The popularity of the manga gave birth to the anime.
This genre is a bit different from the rest. I am not very huge on the romantic comedy anime shows like I am on those filled with action, adventure, suspense or supernatural themes. However, Kaichou wa Maid-sama has a peculiar flare to it that you can’t help but fall in love with. What makes this anime stand out is the endearing relationship between the two leads Usui Takumi and Misaki Ayuzawa.
Usui is what you call a ‘heartbreaker.’ He is popular, rich and all of the girls swoon after him but his cool, calm and collected persona is hard to crack. In fact, he has such an aloof disposition, it’s hard to grasp his attention in anything.
Then, there is Misaki who is the student council president in a male-dominated high school. As the voice of the girls in the school, she is strong, assertive and not afraid to give her opinions and put her foot down. She is often feared and even disliked by her male counterparts but she does not let that dissuade her.
Being the type of person she is, it’s no surprise she would not pay any mind to someone like Usui at first glance. At most, she would tell him to be more gentle when it came to turning down confessions from the girls. While Misaki is a hard worker to the point of being a workaholic, you’ll see that she is like this for a reason. Being raised in a family that does not have much, Misaki finds herself taking on the role of being a ‘breadwinner’ for the family along with her mother. As a result, outside of school, she has a part-time job in a maid cafe.
The girls who work in the cafe dress in themed maid outfits and treat the customers of the shop as ‘masters.’ To Misaki, keeping her hard exterior is important to retain respect from her fellow classmates, especially the males. So, the last thing Misaki wants is for anyone to discover this secret about her. Unfortunately, the last person she would ever want to know her secret is the one person who does find out, and rather quickly too. Yes, it’s Usui.
But, he doesn’t use this information to reveal her to the student body. Instead, he uses it to his benefit, which causes the two to develop quite a unique relationship. In the midst of dramatic and funny situations, Usui and Misaki end up growing close to each other while crazy antics ensue.
If you like this genre of anime I’m sure you will love this one if you haven’t looked at it before.
